Scituate Light College Advising ("Scituate Light," "we," "us") helps students and families navigate the college admissions process. This notice explains what personal information we collect through our website and our services, how we use and share it, and the choices you have. Because our work involves students — many of whom are minors — we take particular care with their information.
01 Information we collect
Information you provide
When you submit our inquiry form or otherwise reach out, we collect the information you choose to give us — typically the parent's or student's name, email address, phone number, the student's grade level, and any details you include in your message.
Information collected during an engagement
If you become a client, we collect information needed to provide advising services. Depending on the engagement, this may include the student's academic record, transcripts and test scores, activities and résumé details, draft essays and application materials, college preferences, and — where relevant to planning — general financial-aid information you choose to share.
Information collected automatically
Our website is hosted by a third-party provider that may automatically log basic technical data such as IP address, browser type, and pages visited, for security and to keep the site running. We do not use this information to build advertising profiles.
02 How we use information
We use personal information to:
- Respond to inquiries and schedule consultations;
- Provide, manage, and improve our advising services;
- Communicate with you about your engagement, deadlines, and scheduling;
- Send invoices and process payments;
- Maintain the security and proper functioning of our website; and
- Comply with legal obligations and enforce our agreements.
We do not sell personal information, and we do not use student information for advertising.
04 Students & minors
Our website and services are directed to parents, guardians, and prospective students, and are intended to be used with the involvement of a parent or guardian when the student is under 18.
We do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children under 13 through this website. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us information through the site without parental involvement, please contact us and we will delete it.
When we work with a minor student, we treat their information as confidential, use it solely to provide the advising services engaged by the family, share it only with the parent or guardian and authorized parties, and retain it only as described below. We never write or submit any part of a student's application; all work product is the student's own. We do not knowingly use student personal information for any purpose other than providing the services and supporting the student's college process.
Independent educational consultants are generally not "schools" under FERPA, but we handle education records with comparable care and will cooperate with families who wish to manage how their student's records are shared.
05 Data retention
We keep personal information for as long as needed to provide our services and for a reasonable period afterward to meet legal, tax, and recordkeeping obligations, after which we delete or de-identify it. Inquiry-form messages from people who do not become clients are kept only as long as needed to respond and follow up. You may ask us to delete your information sooner, as described below.
06 Security
We use reasonable administrative and technical safeguards designed to protect personal information against unauthorized access, loss, or misuse. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, however, so we cannot guarantee absolute security. Please do not send sensitive information (such as financial account numbers or government identifiers) through the website inquiry form.
07 Your choices & rights
You can opt out of non-essential emails at any time by letting us know. Depending on where you live, you may also have rights to access, correct, delete, or obtain a copy of the personal information we hold about you or your student, and to ask us to restrict certain uses. To make a request, contact us using the details below; we will respond as required by applicable law and may need to verify your identity first. We will not discriminate against you for exercising these rights.
09 Third-party links
Our site may link to third-party websites (for example, college or testing-agency pages). We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those sites, and we encourage you to review their notices.
10 Changes to this notice
We may update this notice from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date above, and material changes will be reflected on this page. Your continued use of the site after an update means you accept the revised notice.
